Program

Hill-tribesmen have traditionally used the technique of slash-and-burn for cultivation. After farming the cleared land for several years they move on to new areas and Chiang Rai is strewn with a patchwork of virile forest and infertile areas of soil.

San Jai Tree Planting Base

This reforestation project runs year round and you can spend from one day to a 3 months planting the trees. Just bring yourself along we will give you the training.

The Southeast Asian rainforests are the oldest, consistent rainforests on Earth, dating back to the Pleistocene Epoch 70 million years ago. They have a biological richness and diversity unequaled by that of the Amazon or African rainforests. Yet Southeast Asia is losing its rainforests faster than any equatorial region, and has the fewest remaining primary forests.

Forests thrill us with towering majesty and inspire us with breathtaking beauty. They provide wood for our homes, habitat for wildlife, clean air, and drinking water for millions of us.

Reforestation

AFECT is addressing this problem and provides quality native trees to regenerate degraded areas to build up forest. Our nursery garden provides quality native trees that we use to help reforest the area. In 2010 we hope to transfer around 3000 of our tree saplings to build up forest.

Native trees in nursery

The tree planting expeditions are fun and rewarding. There’s nothing better than to spend the day planting saplings. You will also go out with Buddhist monks tying orange bands around trees, to ‘ordain trees’ thus averting the threat of the tree being cut down.

'Ordained trees'

This project will also involve maintaining our nursery garden which is constantly being expanded - planting new seeds to be capable of making a large impact in the years to come.

Did you know that traveling 2,000 miles in an airplane emits ONE TON of C02 per passenger? Of f set your carbon footprint by planting trees.

CONSERVATION

Reforestation Project

The world’s tropical forests contain huge quantities of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that causes climate change. When they are destroyed for farmland or other purposes, they release their stored carbon prematurely and in quantities greater than all the worlds cars, trucks and planes combined. The result is changing rainfall patterns, rising ocean levels and increased draught.

Tropical forests are also home to most of the world’s threatened species and many are found nowhere else. However climate change could lead to the extinction of one third of all species by 2050. Human communities suffer too, as local people lose the resources on which they depend increasing strife over dwindling supplies.

One of the quickest and most cost effective ways to reduce global carbon emissions is to conserve and plant tropical forests. And when we do so we also protect the natural habitat of many threatened and endangered species. By planting trees we also preserve the livelihood and incomes of local communities, curb climate change and restore biodiversity to the immediate area by providing a habitat for native animals.
